Artist

Kevin Cowell

Based on the sunny English Riviera, Kevin works from his Gallery in Belgrave Road, Torquay.

The Gallery

I opened the gallery to exhibit my artwork in February 2004. Mainly working with panoramic cameras, printing and framing my work as I still do. I have moved on from the panoramic format and am currently working more so in black and white.

New Opportunities

During  2020 through to 2021 I have taken the opportunity to refurbish the gallery and refocus on what is important to me as an artist. Having studied interior design many years ago, I undertook the design and the refurbishment myself. I have loved being able to put my own stamp on the gallery and have had fun with the process. I hope you enjoy the experience when you visit.

Building History

During the refurbishment a customer started to look into the history of the building.

A conversation sparked by the old piece of wall paper exposed after ripping out a display unit.

The building was first occupied in the 1870's by a Henry Mower, a photographer spookily, who had studios throughout the West country. He had a relationship with two sisters and had 9 children between them. It was a chemist from the 1900's, where it is thought that Agatha Christie may have worked at sometime. I can't verify this and I think it may have been slightly further in town.

Although, she lived near by and her father funded the finishing of the nearby church which ran out of funds. The chemist was here until 2004, when I took over as a photographer and based my gallery and studio.
